Japan Post uses this drone option because of its fast and inexpensive. Drones can also be used for inter-post office deliveries.

In Japan, there are 4 levels of drone flight.

  • Class 1 is in-visual flight, mainly used for aerial photography, bridge inspection, etc.
  • Class 2 is self-regulated flight within visual sight, mainly used in spraying agriculture.
  • Level 3 is an out-of-sight flight in unoccupied areas, mainly used in outlying islands, mountain logistics, etc.
  • Class 4 is an out-of-sight flight in manned areas, mainly used in urban logistics, etc.

The Japanese government has relaxed the “Class 4” drone flight, so Japan Post will implement drones to deliver letters in 2023.
